Day trips from Melbourne: road trips, beaches and national parks

Melbourne is also considered Australia's cultural capital, so you won't have to be bored for a day here. But don't forget the surrounding area! The state of Victoria is teeming with beautiful places, such as the iconic Great Ocean Road but Wilsons Promontory, The Grampians and the Yarra Valley wine region. Can't decide? We list the best weekend and day trips from Melbourne for you!

The Grampians

The Grampians National Park is about a three-hour drive from Melbourne. So according to Australians, really just around the corner! But pack your tent and arrange a car, because it's worth the drive. The Grampians is huge, so figure out in advance which part you want to look around in. In the northern part, you'll find a number of caves with Aboriginal paintings. But the area with the most highlights can be found in the middle of the park.

Marvel at the giant MacKenzie Falls, for example, and imagine yourself on top of the world at The Balconies, a rock formation suspended high above a valley. You can get close to most places with your car, but you can also opt for a long hike. For maps of the area and a list of the best routes, visit the visitor centre in Halls Gap. Entry to the national park is free, but if you want to camp, you pay a small fee. You can choose from several camp grounds, but if you go for the real adventure then do it the Australian way and opt for wild camping!

Note: while in the Netherlands it is not very common to carry a credit card in your pocket, in Australia it is a must. For practical things like booking accommodation and renting a car, a credit card is often a requirement and you'll also increasingly encounter 'cards only' in town, such as at Melbourne's annual St Kilda Festival. Don't have one yet? Then a prepaid credit card is a good option. The comparison website Financer lists all providers including prices.

The Great Ocean Road

It is undoubtedly one of the most famous routes in Australia: The Great Ocean Road. And great it is indeed. About a two-hour drive from Melbourne, the official drive along the rugged coast of southern Australia begins. The entire route runs from Geelong to Portland and if you drive it in one go, it will take about three hours. As far as day trips from Melbourne are concerned, this one is perhaps less suitable, because although many travellers do the route in one day, it's much more fun to take at least two days and stay overnight at one of the campsites or ho(s)tels in the villages you encounter along the way.

What not to skip? At least visit the charming fishing village of Port Fairy, watch the waves violently battle the Twelve Apostles and take a night trip to Melba Gully and watch the glow worms appear around you like hundreds of lights in pitch darkness.

Where to stay?

When exploring the vibrant city of Melbourne, immersing yourself in its cultural scene is a must. And what better way to do so than by catching a show at the renowned Her Majesty's Theatre? Mornington Peninsula

South of Melbourne you'll find Port Phillip Bay. Adjacent is the Mornington Peninsula with rolling hills, vineyards and a beautiful coastal strip. It's also only an hour's drive from the city, so this region is also very popular among locals for day trips from Melbourne. If you wanted, you could enjoy luxury spa resorts, wine tastings and Australia's best golf courses here. But of course, you can also pitch your tent at one of the free camping sites, take a canoe trip or hike along one of the many bays. More about what you can see and experience on this peninsula can be found on the Mornington Peninsula website

➸ TIP: If you are a real wine lover, then not only Mornington Peninsula is a must, but also the Yarra Valley. Here you can enjoy extensive wine tasting in a beautiful rolling landscape. The Yarra Valley is also suitable for day trips from Melbourne, as it is only half an hour's drive from the city.

Wilsons Promontory National Park

At the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland, you'll find one of the most enjoyable day trips from Melbourne. Like the Great Ocean Road, it's quite a long drive, so again, if you have time to add a day, definitely do so! Moreover, there is more than enough to do in Wilsons Promontory. For the best panoramic views, go to Mount Bishop or Mount Oberon, swim at white-hot Norman Beach or hike kilometres of hiking trails along the coast. Keep your eyes open along the way because you can spot kangaroos, emus and wombats!

What other great places can you recommend for weekend or day trips from Melbourne?
