Overview of Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a small, compact city. Most of the things you will do are located in and around the city center. In Amsterdam, you can walk to almost everything. There is a great transportation network of trams, buses, and the metro, but for the most part, you can expect to get around primarily on foot.
The city center of Amsterdam is called Centrum. Fanning out from the city center are the horseshoe-shaped canals, an area called Grachtengordel. Just beyond the canal ring are smaller neighborhoods such as Jordaan, Plantage, Oud West, Oud Zuid, and de Pijp.
Below is a map of Amsterdam. The different colors represent the different neighborhoods. The black markers are the popular landmarks.
How to Use This Map: Click the tab in the top left hand corner of the map to view the layers. You can click the check marks to hide or show layers. Each color corresponds to a different neighborhood in Amsterdam. The black markers indicate the most popular landmarks.
Where to Stay in Amsterdam
The hotels we list in this article are very highly rated. All but a few get 8.5 stars or higher on Booking.com, and most of them get at least 9 stars. On this list you will find hotels, apartments, hostels, and houseboats.
Even though this is a narrowed down list of all the hotel options in Amsterdam, it is still a long list. At the end of the article, I narrow it down even more, giving you our top recommendations based on traveling style.
I list hotels as luxury, upscale, mid-range, and budget. A luxury hotel is a 5-star hotel, an upscale hotel is a 4-star property, a mid-range hotel is a 3-star property, and a budget hotel is a 1 or 2-star property or a hostel.
How Much Does It Cost to Stay in Amsterdam?
If you are a budget traveler, you can spend as little as €30 per night in a hostel. If you are traveling as a group of two or more, a double room in a 2-star hotel will cost between €50 and €125. For the mid-range traveler, on average you will pay between €125 and €250 per night for a double room. 4-star rooms usually range from €250 to €400 per night, and the 5-star hotels usually start around €400 and go up from here.
These are the prices for a standard room at this level. 3-star hotels can offer deluxe rooms or rooms with a view for two or three times the price of one of their standard double rooms. The same goes for all classes of hotel.
These average costs can go up based on the time of year and during times of high demand for hotel rooms. Prices may also be cheaper during the off-season. In Amsterdam, the highest demand for hotel rooms is from April through October.
When is the Best Time to Book Your Hotel in Amsterdam?
If you're planning to visit Amsterdam during its peak season, which spans from April to October, it's advisable to make your hotel reservations at least three months in advance. This is particularly crucial if you intend to stay at the city center or along the picturesque canals, as these areas tend to fill up quickly. The boutique-style hotels, as well as the budget and mid-range accommodations that receive favorable reviews, are in high demand.
If you find yourself planning a last-minute visit, rest assured that you should still be able to secure a place to stay in the city. However, keep in mind that you might end up spending more than anticipated or settling for a hotel with mixed reviews. It's always recommended to plan ahead to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience during your Amsterdam adventure.

In the heart of the city, concentric canals create a horseshoe-like pattern, delineating one of the most picturesque locations in Amsterdam. Regardless of whether you're a first-time visitor or a recurring traveler, a refreshing walk along these canals stands as one of the top activities that Amsterdam offers.
In this exquisite Canal Ring, the 'De 9 Straatjes' or The 9 Streets, is an enticing neighborhood to anchor. Positioned on the western portion of the Canal Ring, it weaves through Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, and Herengracht. Perfect for indulging in some vintage retail therapy, relishing scrumptious meals, or simply unwinding with a glass of wine amidst the city's ambient vibe.
